Since we've got a new program on here I thought I'd tell you a little about it in case your in those first stages. Haiti is stinkin' beautiful. The kids are beautiful. The process is very interesting and quirky. We tried to go down this road, but it's not going to work this time, but let me tell you about it just in case it works for your family. There are three main requirements to adopt from Haiti and they are pretty strict about it. There is some buzz about laws changing, but so far that hasn't happened, so here's the current scoop.
- Parents need to be at least 35.
- Married at least 10 years.
- No more than 2 biological kids.
Please keep me up to speed if any of that has changed (update: check the comments section for extra details there if you're interested in Haitian adoption policies)! I'm telling you this because they needs willing parents over there, and the qualifications are tough, so if you happen to meet that set of criteria, Haiti just might be for you. You get your referral very early in the process, shortly after finishing your home study. And then you are free to visit and bond with your child as much as you want while the legal end is being completed. Really interesting program. ReplyDeleteI am actually the nurse where Dahelson and Ella live and am SO excited to see them going to such an awesome family! Just to clarify, with the current laws, you have to meet 2 out of the 3 requirements. Not sure if/when that will change. Also, dating years count as married years in most cases. Thanks for the info and support!
ReplyDeleteHooray for a COTP family! Just to clarify-- it is possible to adopt from Haiti with more than 2 bio kids. We have three bio, one adopted and are in process of adopting two more! An extra step has to happen, but it's possible.
ReplyDeleteWow so awesome makes me tear, so was it Miss Kate or Brooke that shared...we lived and worked with the mission in Haiti and I was part of the Starfish program prior to us serving in Port Au Prince. We have also visited COTP many times, blessings abound for you, the children are cared for, loved and it is a great place! We are the family for April 15th...now adopting from DRC and that is a long story but wanted to send blessings and our prayers that everything will come into place for your first visit and for the fundraising!
